Chris Hannah | Arnaurd's French 75, New Orleans
2017 Bartender of the Year
Title: Head Bartender
Hometown: New Orleans, LA
What to Know: Chris Hannah is one of New Orleans' best known bartenders, which is no easy feat in a city has more bars per capita than any other in the U.S. He's lead the cocktail community for locals and visitors alike, truly setting the bar in one of Amercia's booziest cities.
When and how did you get into bartending?
20 years ago I was working am shifts in the kitchen and needed a part-time night job and started bar-backing. That turned into bartending and I left the kitchen.
How long have you lived in New Orleans?
What’s your favorite part of your career at Arnaud's?
Being part of the fabulous Play that is New Orleans, I'm the head bartender at the French 75 Bar.
What drink at Arnaud's would you recommend to guests?
The Vargas Girl and the Night Tripper
What are your favorite ingredients to work with?
Amari, cordials, fresh herbs
What's one important skill a bartender must have?
Being able to introduce and hold a conversation with a guest at your bar even when talking to someone is the last thing you want to do. There will be times where its tough to perpetually be part of the guest's experience to your establishment, but then that's your job, so do it.
What advice would you give to an aspiring bartender?
Make a list of the bars and bartenders you've heard of and read about, and then attend. Check the bars out, and look for one thing as to why the place and person have been written about...see how it can help you behind the bar.
Favorite holiday to work?
12 night, the start of Mardi Gras.
Give us a secret or pro-tip about Arnaud's that only your regulars know.
There's a secret bar in the middle of both dining rooms called the Richelieu Bar....and there's a Museum upstairs.
Look into your 2017 crystal ball: What's a bartending or nightlife trend you see about to happen?
The rest of the country is going to wake up and realise it's ok to take your remaining drink to go from the bar, and that drinking outside is normal (wink).
